History of Monument
Monument, situated at the base of the Rampart Range in El Paso County, was first settled in 1865 by pioneers like David McShane, who became the town's first postmaster and one of the initial county commissioners. The arrival of the Rio Grande Railroad in 1872 spurred further development, leading to the town's incorporation as Henry's Station on June 2, 1879. The name was later changed to Monument, inspired by the nearby Monument Creek and Monument Rock.
